Nyayo National Stadium is the Oldest and second largest Stadium in Kenya and essentially the mother Stadium to the 60,000 capacity formerly Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani. It is strategically located near the City Center, along Uhuru Highway, Langata and Aerodrome Roads Junction and opposite the famous Nakumatt Mega Shopping Center.
Built in 1983, the 30,000 capacity Stadium has played host to countless sports activities. It has been used mostly by AFC Leopards for the premier leagues team home games and other local professional football matches. Its completion placed Kenya in a position to bid for the 1987 All Africa Games. Kenya was later awarded the bid that raised the two stadiums, The Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium, to an international status. It has also hosted the 2010 African Championships in Athletics and is set alongside others to host the Championship for African Nations (CHAN) in 2018. Apart from hosting National Team Matches, the stadium has also hosted the Rugby Union Team Mwamba FC for its home games.
The Nyayo National Stadium which was once renamed the Coca-Cola Stadium, a status which was revoked by the government, headquarters the Athletics Kenya and the Football Kenya Federation. It is also neighbor to Toyota Kenya and Sports Stadia Management Board Offices
It consists of The Main Stadium, an Indoor Arena, an Aquatic Center and a Handball Court.
The Main Stadium
The Stadium is a fully built sports complex with a 30,000-seat capacity built around the running track. It also has a FIFA approved standard football pitch that is home to several local(national) and international matches. Its capacity allows it to host large gatherings such as political rallies, crusades, concerts national celebrations. The Stadium also has twin VIP lounges with a fully internet enabled media center and is also floodlit for night events.
The Indoor Gymnasium
It has a 2,500-seat capacity and hosts the Kenya National Basketball League. The Gymnasium is floodlit, and has a fully computerized and electronic score boarding system, a martial arts center and a snack bar. This indoor arena is fully covered and is capable of hosting several indoor games including; basketball, badminton boxing and other social functions
The Aquatic Center
It includes an Olympic size swimming pool, 50m by 25m, which is used for professional competitions and sometimes personal practice with fully trained lifeguards. It is also fitted with spectator terraces that can hold up to 2000 people and is open to the public all week long.
Handball and Volleyball Courts
Available for social and sporting events is this court with terraces that can hold 1500 Pax and is open and ideal for handball and volleyball training.
