In 1979, Kisumu Municipal Stadium was renamed to Moi Stadium after the then head of state, H.E Daniel Toritich Arap Moi, visited the Multiuse Venue. The Home Stadium of Kisumu Telkom (and sometimes Real Kisumu as well as other local teams from the lower tier leagues) has a well-known capacity of up to 5,000 Pax and is mostly used for soccer matches and other sports events.

The Stadium is situated on Ondiek Highway, Kisumu in the Western Region of Kenya. Kisumu is a Port City in Kisumu County and is elevated at 3,711 feet above sea level on Lake Victoria. It is the third largest City in Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa and second most important in the Lake Victoria region after Kampala in Uganda. There is one Airport in Kisumu.

Kisumu’s Moi Stadium has been known in the past for hosting high profile events of both local and international pedigree. Several Olympic Athletics Trials in the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s were hosted here. The town has also seen a number of Kenya Communications Sports Organizations (KECOSO) games frequently featuring here.

Today the Stadium hosts Kenya Premier League matches and it has been pitted for renovation to bring it to international standards by the County Government of Kisumu. Since 2012, the Government of Kenya and World Football Governing Body (FIFA) have been working on its refurbishment. The work begun and the field was overlaid with artificial turf.

However, an inspection by Confederation for African Football (CAF) put the Stadium at the risk of not hosting the Confederation of African Nations Football (CHAN) slotted for 2018 in Kenya. Reasons cited include the laxity of Kisumu County to relocate the Kachok Dumpsite and the inadequate and small sized changing rooms.
